With just under two weeks left before the transfer deadline, the 2025-26 Premier League summer window is on course to become the most expensive in history.
According to data from FootballTransfers.com, English top-flight clubs have already spent £2.26bn since the market opened on 1 June, putting them within touching distance of the £2.36bn record set in 2023.
Liverpool’s club-record capture of German playmaker Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a guaranteed £100m rising to £116m with add-ons remains the headline deal of the summer.
He was swiftly followed by Hugo Ekitike, who joined the Reds from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m, while Manchester United bolstered their attack with Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig for a fee that could climb beyond £70m.
Manchester City has also made waves, investing heavily in young talent, including Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.
In total, six Premier League clubs have broken their transfer records this summer, with Brentford, Bournemouth, Burnley, Sunderland, and Nottingham Forest all making landmark signings.
Sunderland’s ambitious recruitment drive, featuring the arrival of Granit Xhaka and Habib Diarra, underlines how survival in the Premier League has become more costly than ever.
Spending by English clubs has already outstripped that of Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga combined.
With uncertainty surrounding big names, such as Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, the £2.5bn barrier could soon be shattered, further cementing the Premier League’s dominance in the global transfer market.
