Arsenal are closing in on a sensational deal to sign Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze in a move worth up to £68m.
The Gunners reignited their interest on Wednesday, hijacking Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of the England international after talks between Spurs and Palace had appeared advanced.
Eze’s release clause of £60m plus £8m in add-ons expired before the season began, but Arsenal are prepared to match that figure to secure the 27-year-old.
Sources suggest Eze has favoured a move to the Emirates, having been an Arsenal supporter during his youth and spending time in their academy before joining QPR.
Spurs had prioritised Eze following James Maddison’s long-term injury and believed a deal was close. However, Arsenal stepped in after concerns over Kai Havertz’s knee injury, which has left Mikel Arteta short of attacking options.
Eze’s versatility and creativity make him an ideal fit for Arsenal’s system as they aim to bolster their title challenge.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner insists Eze remains committed, confirming he will start in Thursday’s UEFA Conference League tie against Fredrikstad.
Yet, with the player keen to move before the September 1 deadline, Palace face an uphill battle to keep their star man. If Arsenal completes the signing, it would be one of the most dramatic transfer twists of the summer.
