Liverpool stormed to their 20th English league title on Sunday with a commanding 5-1 win over Tottenham at Anfield, bringing an end to Manchester City’s long reign at the top of English football. The victory means Liverpool now stand level with Manchester United for the most top-flight titles in history.
Arne Slot’s side only needed a draw to secure the trophy but chose to finish the job in style. Tottenham briefly threatened an upset when former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke headed them into an early lead. But the celebration was short-lived. Luis Diaz quickly pulled Liverpool level with a close-range finish before Alexis Mac Allister smashed home a powerful strike to turn the game around. Cody Gakpo added a third before the break, leaving Spurs overwhelmed.
In the second half, Mohamed Salah ended his recent goal drought by slotting home his 28th league goal of the campaign. The Egyptian winger marked the moment by taking a selfie with a supporter. Destiny Udogie’s own goal later completed Tottenham’s miserable afternoon.
Slot, who arrived last summer following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, has achieved a remarkable first season in England. He becomes the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League and joins a small group of coaches who have won the title in their debut season, alongside names like Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.
Speaking after the match, Slot praised the players, the staff, and the legacy left behind by Klopp. “The work ethic, the quality, and the culture were already strong when I arrived,” he said. “It made this journey possible.”
Liverpool’s dominance this season has surprised many, especially after losing a legendary manager. With only two defeats in 34 games, they collected 82 points and left title rivals Arsenal and City trailing behind. Arsenal sit 15 points adrift, set for another second-place finish.
Captain Virgil van Dijk called the triumph a reflection of the club’s spirit. “This is the most beautiful club in the world,” he said. Meanwhile, Salah described the feeling as even sweeter than their 2020 title, which was won behind closed doors due to the pandemic.
Even rival manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged Liverpool’s brilliance, calling them “deserved champions.”
Liverpool will officially lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield after their final home game against Crystal Palace on May 25. With four matches left, they still can surpass Manchester City’s 91-point total from last season and add further shine to a memorable campaign.
