In a sensational upset, Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko stunned top seed Coco Gauff in straight sets at the National Bank Open in Montreal.
The 18-year-old wildcard needed just 62 minutes to dismantle the World No. 2, cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 victory and securing a spot in the quarter-finals.
Mboko played fearless, attacking tennis from the first point, breaking Gauff three times to dominate the opening set in only 25 minutes. The second set proved tighter, but Mboko seized her single break opportunity and held firm to close out a landmark win on home soil.
“Your support was incredible,” Mboko told the crowd in French, overwhelmed by the “Ole, Ole, Ole!” chants that echoed through the stadium. “I’m so happy to beat such a great champion.”
Once ranked 333 at the start of the season, Mboko has surged into the live top 60 after this victory. Former Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard called her rise “nothing short of incredible,” praising her power, maturity, and composure.
Next, Mboko faces Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last eight. With poise beyond her years, the Canadian prodigy is quickly becoming one of the breakout stars of 2025.
