Newcastle United have opened talks with Southampton over a potential move for England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, as the Magpies look to strengthen their squad ahead of a demanding 2025–26 campaign that includes Champions League football.
Ramsdale, 27, joined Southampton from Arsenal in 2024 for £18 million but endured a difficult season as the Saints were relegated with a record-low 12 points.
Despite the team’s struggles, Ramsdale made 30 Premier League appearances and was one of the few consistent performers, earning an England call-up as recently as March.
Talks remain in early stages, with Newcastle considering both a loan and a permanent deal. Southampton, however, prefers a full sale on substantial terms. Ramsdale would reunite with manager Eddie Howe, who coached him during their time at Bournemouth.
Newcastle’s pursuit follows the collapse of a £27 million move for Burnley’s James Trafford, after Manchester City exercised a matching rights clause.
With current backup Martin Dúbravka approaching 37 and Nick Pope needing reliable competition, Ramsdale offers both experience and long-term value.
While his record includes three Premier League relegations, Ramsdale’s distribution, leadership, and resilience could prove crucial for Newcastle’s evolving system under Howe. A move to St. James’ Park would mark his return to top-flight contention and European football.
